Don't Let Vacation Brain Drag Your Business Down

Yep, it is now summer for most of us in the United States.  But, for businesses and their owners, it is an important time of year since we are now (already) half way through the year.  We have worked hard and may begin to get a bit tired, along with family demands, keeping distractions at an all time high.

So, how do we keep our focus while many around us seem to lack focus?  Here are a few thoughts on ways to keep (or regain) the focus needed to keep our businesses on the right track.  

1.  Acknowledge the need to take a break.  Sometimes you just have to rest.  But don't let it be too long.  You want to take enough time off to be refreshed and remotivated, but not to long as to loose your momentum.  

2.  Take a look at your goals and your year to date progress.  You may need to reassess or adapt based on events over the last few months.

3.  Keep your team aware of any important goals and deadlines, and their progress towards them.
 
4.  Be extra attentive to deadlines and allow for extra time to get things done.  You will be contending with not only you or your team's vacations but also those of your customers and vendors.  This isn't to say take your foot off the gas pedal, but understand that you may have longer time frames because of these influences and you should plan accordingly.  

5.  Track your key indicators daily.  It really is amazing the difference when you do this - even if you are a team of one.  Seeing it on paper, whiteboard, or whatever can have a big impact on whether you decide to get that last call or email done, versus just taking it a bit easier.  

Remember, the more you do, earlier, may not only bring extra rewards, but can also lighten the stress later in the year.
